THE POWER OF SMILING

“WHEN YOU'RE SMILIN', THE WHOLE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU”

Life, you know, is all about give and take, and so to get the best out of the world you have to strive to give it the best. And so, as they said in a movie a few years ago, laugh and the world will laugh with you, cry and you will cry alone.

That is why my advice today is to laugh, smile and do it as much as possible, indeed remember to do it consistently and regularly, as if it were part of your daily routine to achieve well-being.

But let's take a closer look at this so beneficial and at the same time so mundane action, which we often forget to do with the right constancy, and let's try to understand what are the benefits of such a simple gesture.

First of all, laughing improves mood because it increases the release of endorphins, those substances produced by the brain that we call neurotransmitters and that when released can help relieve pain, reduce stress and give us a feeling of euphoria and well-being. Laughing also is good for the brain and health in general. It increases our resistance to stressful situations and helps us respond better in everyday difficulties, reducing anxiety, nervousness and negativity, all feelings and situations that limit our concentration. And this is also true if we do self-deprecation; according to a study at the University of Granada, the ability to laugh at oneself is usually associated with greater psychological well-being and better ability to fight anxiety.

It may sound strange to you, but the magical power of laughter applies even when we are faking it. You got it right, the movement of the muscles we engage in a smile manages to trick the amygdala by triggering those mechanisms we have seen that are capable of promoting well-being and positivity.

Laughing then is also good for the body: it accelerates the heart rate, improves circulation, dilates the lungs and burns calories, yes you got it right, according to some studies a hundred laughs are the equivalent of about ten minutes of physical activity.

And the benefits certainly do not end there, in addition to the psychological and physical ones seen so far we must not forget the social ones: facing life with a smile will also help you in your relationships with those around you. Those who smile have more charm. Could that be why when we introduce ourselves to someone we usually do it with a beautiful smile? I certainly believe so!

But not only that. The more we smile the more beautiful we become, because the grimace we make during a smile or laughter sets in motion as many as 12 muscles in the face helping us tone our face. When we are stressed then we are uglier, let's admit it. Of course, it may not be a very scientific motivation, but I am just someone who has been so interested in these topics and so much has read, looked at himself and others with depth and now wants to share what he has seen, feels and feels. And when he couldn't remember how to smile, he saw himself even less beautiful.

So let's start moving those 12 facial muscles again! Smiling will make us more attractive and make us feel better and more confident. After all, as Voltaire said, "I have decided to be happy because it is good for my health," and, I would add, it also makes me feel more charming.
